Original Antique Peace Lily Botanical Chromolithograph by Hoola van Nooten, 1880
Description: An original antique botanical chromolithograph depicting Spathiphyllopsis minahassae, an exceptionally rare tropical aroid native to the Minahasa Peninsula of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. The plate was painted from nature by Berthe Hoola van Nooten and published in the third edition of Fleurs, Fruits et Feuillages Choisis de la Flore et de la Pomone de l'Ile de Java, issued by G. Severeyns in Brussels around 1880.
This elegant composition portrays the plant's magnificent glossy foliage surrounding its graceful white spathe and flowering spadix, accompanied by detailed botanical studies illustrating the flower's structure. The restrained palette of deep emerald greens and ivory white creates a refined, timeless composition that would suit both classic and contemporary interiors.
Spathiphyllopsis minahassae belongs to the Araceae family, the same botanical family as modern Peace Lilies (Spathiphyllum). Unlike the familiar houseplant, however, this is a rare Indonesian species endemic to the rainforests of North Sulawesi. Its elegant inflorescence and lush tropical foliage made it a remarkable subject for nineteenth-century botanical illustration.
Berthe Hoola van Nooten's botanical works are regarded among the finest chromolithographs of the Victorian period. Painted from living specimens in Batavia (present-day Jakarta), her illustrations combine scientific precision with exceptional artistic beauty. The sophisticated chromolithographic printing process faithfully reproduces the richness and subtle shading of the original watercolors.
