Original Ink Drawings of Veiled Women by Charles Burki, 1948 – Orientalist Illustrations
Two original pen-and-ink drawings by Dutch artist Charles Burki (1909–1994), both signed and dated 1948. These finely executed works depict veiled women in traditional attire, rendered with Burki’s hallmark precision and strong graphic contrast. The left composition features three women set against a backdrop of domed roofs and minarets, while the right presents a single, closely framed portrait of a woman in a richly patterned veil, her expressive eyes conveying both mystery and presence.
Executed in India ink on paper, these illustrations display Burki’s confident linework and mastery of light and texture. The cross-hatching and controlled ink shading create an elegant sense of depth and fabric movement, while the facial detail—especially the eyes—anchors each image with remarkable intensity.
Created during Burki’s postwar years, these works belong stylistically to his period of strong illustrative output for Dutch and international publications. They reflect the 20th-century fascination with Orientalist subjects, popular in both European magazines and book art of the 1940s and 1950s. While the imagery follows the conventions of that era, Burki’s treatment avoids caricature; instead, it emphasizes craftsmanship, beauty, and technical draughtsmanship, aligning him with contemporaries such as Joop van der Reijden and Jan Wiegman.
The pair is striking both as historical illustration and as examples of mid-century European graphic art with near-cinematic quality—displaying the same refined ink control that made Burki’s later gouache and watercolor works so successful.
Condition report: Both sheets in very good original condition with light toning and minor edge wear consistent with age. Small handling creases and occasional foxing spots, mainly in the margins, do not detract from the image. Paper retains strong contrast and crisp black ink.
Framing tips: Ideal for presentation as a pair within a double aperture mount or two matching black or walnut frames with ivory mats. The high contrast of the ink drawings benefits from neutral framing materials to emphasize their graphic clarity.
