French naturalist, mathematician, biologist, cosmologist and author. Buffon’s views influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Charles Darwin. This handcoloured engraving is by Fournier after Ange Louis Janet-Lange (1815-1872).
