Set of four original antique engraved and hand-coloured maps of ancient Greece, engraved by Ambroise Tardieu for the atlas accompanying Jean-Jacques Barthélemy’s celebrated Voyage du jeune Anacharsis en Grèce.
Together, the four maps provide an attractive and remarkably detailed survey of central and southern ancient Greece, including Boeotia, Thessaly, Aetolia, Acarnania, Corinth, Achaea and surrounding regions and islands.
The set comprises:
1. La Béotie – Plate 24
Detailed map of ancient Boeotia, centred on Thebes and extending from the Gulf of Crissa to the Euripus and Euboea. Numerous historically important locations are identified, including Thebes, Plataea, Thespiae, Orchomenus and Lake Copais.
2. La Thessalie – Plate 25
A detailed map of ancient Thessaly and the surrounding territories. The map extends north towards Macedonia and south towards Phocis and Euboea, and includes the celebrated region of Mount Olympus as well as the famous pass of Thermopylae.
3. L’Étolie et l’Acarnanie – Plate 26
Map of ancient Aetolia and Acarnania together with the island of Leucadia and the islands of Cephalonia and Ithaca. The map encompasses a large section of western Greece and the Ionian coast, with the islands particularly attractively delineated.
4. La Corinthie, la Sicyonie, la Phliasie et l’Achaïe – Plate 27
An extensive map covering Corinthia, Sicyonia, Phliasia and Achaea, together with much of the northern Peloponnese. Corinth, Argos, Olympia, Arcadia and the Gulf of Corinth are shown, along with numerous ancient settlements, rivers and mountain ranges.
Each map is finely engraved with detailed mountain ranges, rivers, coastlines, ancient settlements and geographical features. Original outline colouring in pink, yellow, blue, green and orange distinguishes the historical regions and gives the maps an attractive decorative character.
Together the four plates form a cohesive group and display particularly well as a set. They would make an impressive arrangement when framed individually and hung together.

Condition:
Good antique condition with general age toning, scattered foxing and occasional stains and marks, consistent with age. Some discoloration is visible in the margins and along the sheet edges, with old mounting or binding-related traces visible on some sheets. Original outline colouring remains attractive and the engraved areas are strong and detailed. Please study the photographs carefully as they form an important part of the condition description.
