This original 1882 heliogravure, based on a charcoal drawing (fusain) by renowned French artist Maxime Lalanne, depicts 'La Porte Saint-Antoine' — the historic Sint Antoniespoort in Amsterdam.
The view forms part of the beautifully illustrated publication 'La Hollande à vol d’Oiseau' ("The Netherlands from a Bird’s Flight"), authored by the Dutch art historian Henry Havard and published in Paris by Decaux and Quantin.
Lalanne, celebrated for his masterful etchings and atmospheric charcoal studies, brings a deep sense of mood and urban grandeur to this print. The photogravure technique (heliogravure), which reproduces the subtle tonal range of Lalanne’s original charcoal, captures the smoky textures and delicate architectural detail with superb fidelity.
