Roman Noblewomen Costume Engravings, Hand-Colored Pair, Rome 1581
This elegant pair of mid-18th century hand-colored costume engravings depicts two noble Roman women in richly detailed late Renaissance dress, titled “Full Dress of a Roman Lady, in 1581” and “Habit of a Noble Matron of Rome, in 1581.” The engravings present refined interpretations of aristocratic female fashion in Renaissance Rome, combining graceful drapery, elaborate jewelry, and sumptuous textiles with the restrained elegance characteristic of historical costume studies.
Produced circa 1749 by the European School, these engravings belong to the highly collectible tradition of European costume books that documented the fashions and customs of earlier centuries and foreign nations. Such works were widely admired during the Enlightenment period for both their educational value and decorative sophistication. The original hand-coloring remains especially attractive, with delicate tones of pale blue, sage green, ivory, rose, and soft gold lending the compositions a refined and harmonious appearance.
The first engraving portrays a Roman lady in ceremonial full dress, adorned with pearls, jeweled ornaments, and flowing drapery that reflects the luxurious courtly styles of late 16th-century Italy.
