Old Cairo on the Nile with Distant Pyramids – Antique Egypt Engraving, c.1755
This elegant 18th-century copper engraving presents a panoramic view of Old Cairo seen from across the Nile, with a pyramid visible at the far horizon. The plate originates from Frederik Ludvig Norden’s Voyage d’Égypte et de Nubie, first published in Copenhagen in 1755. Norden was a Danish naval officer and trained draughtsman whose work marks a turning point in European representations of Egypt. Unlike earlier imaginative or symbolic depictions, his engravings are based on direct observation and measured drawing, offering an unusually accurate view of Egypt’s landscape, architecture, and daily life along the Nile.
The inclusion of a pyramid “à perte de vue” (fading into the distance) is especially compelling, linking the living city of Cairo with Egypt’s ancient past in a single, restrained image.
