Original hand-colored engraving of the people of the New Hebrides (today known as Vanuatu), taken from the early 19th-century ethnographic work “De Mensch, zoo als hij voorkomt op den bekenden aardbol”, published in Amsterdam by Johannes Allart. Drawn by J. Kuyper and engraved by L. Portman.
This vivid composition shows a family walking through a tropical island landscape. The man carries tools and a pan flute, while the woman supports an infant on her back, adorned with traditional jewelry and wearing a woven grass skirt. A smoking volcano rises in the background, adding dramatic atmosphere and geographical context. The strong original hand color highlights skin tones, textiles, and natural surroundings with remarkable depth.
Ethnographic prints from this important Dutch series are increasingly sought-after for both visual appeal and cultural documentation, making this a striking and historically meaningful artwork for collectors.
