Description: Large and highly detailed antique map of the Ottoman Empire, Arabia and Persia, based on the cartography of celebrated French mapmaker Guillaume Delisle (1675–1726). Published in Amsterdam by Covens & Mortier, c. 1744.
Titled "Carte de la Turquie de l'Arabie et de la Perse", the map extends from Italy and North Africa across the eastern Mediterranean, Turkey and the Middle East to Persia and the Caspian Sea. It includes Egypt and the Nile, the Arabian Peninsula, the Red Sea, Mesopotamia, Armenia and extensive parts of Central Asia.
Copper engraving on laid paper with original outline hand-coloring. Particularly attractive is the elaborate decorative cartouche at lower right. Delisle was among the most influential cartographers of the early 18th century and was renowned for introducing greater geographical accuracy based on astronomical observations.
Published by the important Amsterdam firm of Covens & Mortier, which acquired and reissued many significant French cartographic works during the 18th century. A decorative and historically important map of the Ottoman world and Middle East.
Condition: Very good condition for its age. Original central fold as issued, light age toning and minor handling wear. Small marks and imperfections consistent with age. Original outline coloring remains attractive. Please review the images for further condition details.
