Antique Greek Jugs with Chariot & Animal Scenes Lithograph, 1883
Original antique color lithograph depicting a varied collection of ancient Greek jugs and pouring vessels decorated with classical, equestrian and animal imagery, published in Berlin in 1883 as part of Albert Genick’s monumental work on Greek ceramics.
This impressive large-format plate is titled “Kannen” and presents five different examples of ancient Greek jugs and related pouring vessels, accompanied by detailed archaeological studies of their construction and decoration.
The two larger vessels in the lower section are particularly striking. The jug at left has a broad rounded body decorated with a continuous frieze of animals and birds rendered in black and terracotta. Its tall neck and elegantly curved handle give the vessel a strong sculptural silhouette.
The large vessel at right is among the most decorative examples on the plate. Its upper register contains a lively horse-drawn chariot scene with classical figures, while a second ornamental frieze below incorporates additional animals. Geometric bands and radiating decoration complete the composition.
Between these larger vessels is a smaller jug decorated with a classical figural scene, providing another variation on ancient Greek painted pottery.
Two additional vessels occupy the upper section of the plate, including a slender pouring vessel and a smaller rounded jug. Genick surrounds the objects with precise archaeological line drawings documenting mouths, handles and structural details, emphasizing the scholarly character of the publication.
The combination of five different vessel forms, horse-drawn chariot imagery, animals, birds and classical figures makes this a particularly varied and decorative plate from the series.
The print originates from the second edition of Albert Genick’s important publication on Greek ceramics, published by Ernst Wasmuth in Berlin in 1883. The complete work comprised 36 color lithographic plates, including four double-page plates, illustrating amphorae, kraters, hydriae, kantharoi, kylikes, jugs, bowls, rhyta and other examples of ancient Greek ceramic art.
The lithographs were produced by the Berlin printing establishment Hein & Mosler. Albert Genick (1837–1906), a Berlin-trained architect, became particularly known for his precise graphic documentation of ancient ceramics. This publication is regarded as his principal work. Complete examples are rare, and individual plates from the series are increasingly difficult to find.

Condition: Good to very good antique condition. The black, terracotta and cream coloring remains well preserved, including the detailed chariot and animal decoration. Light age-related toning with scattered minor foxing and spotting. A faint pencil annotation is visible near the upper central area of the sheet. Minor wear and slight irregularity along the sheet edges consistent with age. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
